I’ve tested the 11 best New Jersey registered agent services. Here’s my review.

I am quite a cynical person when it comes to business. I happen to believe that most business entities and corporations are motivated purely by financial interest and that they are always looking for weird ways to make a quick buck.

Assuming that most registered agents in New Jersey are no different, I dedicated the last 12 months to reviewing the 11 best registered agent services in New Jersey.

Here are the results of my investigation:

Best Registered Agent: Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest Registered Agent

  • Easy sign-up process
  • Mail scanning, uploading, and forwarding
  • Alerts for important upcoming compliance deadlines
  • $125 per state per year
  • Corporate Guides who can answer your small business questions

  • No dedicated account manager
Get Northwest Registered Agent

Out of all the services I’ve reviewed, Northwest Registered Agent offers the smoothest experience, and they undoubtedly have the best customer support in the New Jersey registered agent industry. Here’s what Northwest Registered Agent does for my company as part of their registered agent service:

  • Scan and upload ALL my mail.
  • Provide a business name and business address in New Jersey.
  • Provide a secure online platform where I store all my important documents.
  • Operate in all 50 states.
  • Charge $125 for their services.
  • Provide an agent present at a physical address to accept Service of Process during normal business hours.
  • Provide compliance alerts that warn me of upcoming filing dates so that my new business in New Jersey maintains its good standing with the New Jersey Division of Revenue.

If you value customer service as much as I do, you’ll like Northwest Registered Agent. When I called to test them with obscure questions, I spoke to one of their Corporate Guides, who will help you throughout the whole LLC formation process.

What’s a Corporate Guide? Well, they are 100% in-house and made up of professionally trained personnel who I’ve discovered are former business leaders with backgrounds in various careers, such as law and marketing. Because of this experience, the Corporate Guide I spoke to was able to meet every challenge I raised, even the silly, unreasonable ones I devised to test her.

She took the time to inquire about specifics and provided me with the most precise response in a charming and respectful way.

Northwest Registered Agent advertises next-level customer service, and I was thrilled to see that they deliver on that promise. To get expert advice and support, visit their website today.

Visit Harbor Compliance

Before I chose the Northwest Registered Agent as the best New Jersey registered agent service, Harbor Compliance was the #1 contender for first place. They provided every essential service I expect from a reputable registered agent in New Jersey and on top of that, they also connected me to a dedicated account manager who was always ready to address any questions I had about their services.

Granted, the account manager did not provide the level of advice I get from Northwest Registered Agent’s Corporate Guides, but at $99, it’s difficult to find personalized support services at this price point.

My Process

Finding the best New Jersey registered agent service was a laborious year-long process. Below is the process I followed to achieve my results.

My Start

I always doubt the sincerity of business entities that market themselves with tags like “the best in the state” or “we provide a money-back guarantee.” These phrases are often superficial, and it’s only after I’ve paid for their services that I realize it’s all show and no substance. This is quite infuriating to me because I’ll end up wasting money on substandard services, and getting my money back is usually a difficult experience.

When I decided to start my business in New Jersey, I wasn’t sure which registered agent service to use, and on top of that, I’d heard horror stories about people missing court dates because they weren’t notified by their registered agent.

After weeks of indecision, I suddenly had a brainwave: “If I can’t make up my mind on who to choose, why not try all of them?” So I did. I started with a list of around 50 registered agent service providers in New Jersey, which I shrunk down to 11 companies that showed promise, made up 11 fake companies, and keyed in my credit card details on their sign-up pages, starting the months-long investigative process.

My Criteria

I made a list of criteria to help me decide which registered agent in New Jersey was the best.

First, a New Jersey registered agent must provide all the essential services that my new business entity in the state of New Jersey needs without any hidden costs—the pricing options must be clear-cut and laid bare from the onset, with no pushy upsells.

A good New Jersey registered agent must do the following:

  • Ensure my legal documents are received and responded to promptly.
  • Provide a street address in New Jersey to keep my own street address off public record.
  • Receive Service of Process.
  • Provide a registered office that receives important communication from the New Jersey Division of Revenue and the Secretary of State.
  • Provide compliance alerts so that I don’t miss any key filing deadlines.
  • Scan, upload, and forward all my mail.
  • Provide online access to important business documents on a secure portal.
  • Have a streamlined application process that’s easy to follow.

Any New Jersey registered agent who does not provide all these services was booted off my list.

Second, they need a history of quality service. I didn’t want to invest in a newly formed New Jersey registered agent service only for them to close down in a year due to bankruptcy or some other reason. They need to have a bit of “mileage” in the industry. The least I could allow was 10 years of continuous service.

Third on my list of criteria was the sign-up process. There is nothing more tedious than repetitively keying in your details during an online application process. I needed a New Jersey registered agent with an intuitive and easy-to-navigate website that uses pre-filled data forms.

Finally, my New Jersey registered agent must have reliable and trustworthy customer care personnel. Their customer support had to be available at all times and able to help me solve my issues in a courteous and helpful manner.

My Journey

I anticipated my search for the best New Jersey registered agent would be time consuming at first, since I had so many registered agent service providers to consider, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could eliminate a significant number of them with only a few mouse clicks.

This stage involved browsing unfavorable web reviews and comments written by disgruntled consumers. Some cited concern with the lack of vital registered agent services, while others voiced displeasure with price structures, and yet others with poor customer service. After removing the underperformers, I was left with 16 organizations on my list.

Next, I proceeded to the websites of these remaining New Jersey registered agents to check out their claims and promises, and I immediately recognized I had enough justification to exclude a few more registered agent providers from my list of competitors.

After eliminating these subpar New Jersey registered agent service providers, I was left with only 11 agencies. Take a peek at the reviews I’ve written below.

My Results

The 11 top New Jersey registered agent service providers are listed below in order of preference.

My Favorite Registered Agent Service: Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest Registered Agent provides some of the industry’s most comprehensive registered agent services. I adore their consistent and honest pricing, and they have a stellar reputation for offering excellent customer service.

My Experience

I could see right away that their IT staff had put in a lot of effort to make sure that their sign-up process was simple and straightforward, and that accessing my personal online account was easy as well.

Northwest Registered Agent provided a business name and physical street address in New Jersey so that I could keep my personal info off public record and receive communication from the Division of Revenue office during regular business hours, as well as ensuring that my Articles of Organization (also known as Articles of Incorporation for certain business structures) were properly completed and submitted.

Scanning, uploading, and forwarding critical legal papers to my online document portal are also included in their package, as are compliance notifications that remind me of crucial filing dates, such as my annual report. Also, even though my business entity hasn’t been sued yet, Northwest Registered Agent is more than capable of handling Service of Process on behalf of my New Jersey Limited Liability Company.

Their customer support, though, is the reason they rank so high on my list.

Each Corporate Guide specializes in a field that is pertinent to your New Jersey LLC. When I sought assistance, they guided me through every stage of the Limited Liability Company (LLC) formation procedure and gave invaluable business advice on topics like marketing and sourcing qualified staff for my budding New Jersey LLC, and they were accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This type of business counsel from boutique business consulting firms may cost thousands of dollars, so it’s reassuring to discover a New Jersey registered agent that includes it in their registered agent packages for free.

My Recommendation

Northwest Registered Agent is a great option for anybody looking for a New Jersey registered agent service that provides unrivaled customer service and includes a lot of extras without trying to promote items that clients don’t need.

When you’re ready to start your business in New Jersey and need to appoint a registered agent, and you want the most professional, trustworthy, and economical New Jersey registered agent for your business, sign up with Northwest Registered Agent.

My Budget Pick: Harbor Compliance

Harbor Compliance came in second overall since they provided me with a personal account manager who was dedicated to assisting me with the LLC formation process. With a cost of $99, they are also the cheapest registered agent in New Jersey.

My Experience

One feature about Harbor Compliance that I liked was how transparent they were.

Their website was simple to use, which saved me a lot of time all through the registration process. You can really see that they put a lot of effort into all the bells and whistles on their website.

Harbor Compliance’s marketing strategy reflects their straightforward style. They offer all of the services that my New Jersey LLC needed to get up and running, with no hidden costs or clickbait packages to entice me to purchase more expensive upgrades. They forwarded my formation documents to a physical address, and promised to inform me if and when I was served with Service of Process papers.

A most welcome surprise, however, was the dedicated account manager they provided, who was available during normal business hours to update me about any new changes to my New Jersey registered agent account.

The main contrast between Northwest Registered Agent and Harbor Compliance is their customer service. Harbor Compliance provided me with a personal account manager who kept me up to date solely on my registered agent account details. They don’t provide the small business help and advice of Northwest’s Corporate Guides.

My Recommendation

Harbor Compliance provides registered agent service in New Jersey at the lowest price in the industry. They clearly care about you and your new LLC and want to assist in your business endeavors.

They’ll ensure that your New Jersey LLC stays on the right side of the law and that your legal duties to the New Jersey Division of Revenue are met. Their web platform is also well designed and straightforward.

If you’re establishing a new business in New Jersey or transferring registered agents, and you need a registered agent with inexpensive services and a dedicated account manager, consider Harbor Compliance today.

Other Registered Agent Services

In my search for the best registered agent for your New Jersey business, I reviewed nine additional registered agent providers. Here they are in no particular order.

Rapid Registered Agent—A few fun features

Rapid Registered Agent charges $120 for registered agent services in New Jersey. They assisted me with a number of the time-consuming forms required to stay in good standing with the New Jersey Division of Revenue, and because I dislike paperwork, this was quite convenient for me.

They don’t provide the same degree of customer service as Harbor Compliance or Northwest Registered Agent, but they are still a trustworthy organization that will handle all my company’s legal duties so I can focus on my everyday operations.

Rocket Lawyer—Great for online services

Rocket Lawyer isn’t what I’d call a full-service New Jersey registered agent.

They are, in reality, an online legal business that provides a few registered agent functions, such as forwarding Service of Process paperwork to my mail and providing access to an online document repository for storing important business documents.

Rocket Lawyer is a solid choice if you require all your New Jersey business’s legal duties handled by one agency, despite the fact that they specialize in legal advice rather than registered agent service.

Team ‘Nothing Special’

The four New Jersey registered agent service providers listed below are so similar that they’re scarcely worth mentioning individually. This “decent, but nothing extraordinary” group includes Jumpstart Filings ($150), SunDoc Filings ($159), ZenBusiness ($199), Registered Agents Inc. ($200), and Incorporate.com ($235).

These are registered agent service providers that dabble in the New Jersey registered agent service sector and provide what I want from a registered agent service, without giving anything new or notable.

Team ‘Big Brand’

These are well-known companies that rely on their “Big Brand” reputation to provide New Jersey registered agent services: LegalZoom ($299), Wolters Kluwer ($305), and CSC Global ($299).

Because they all have a nice-looking website with all the bells and whistles and savvy marketing professionals, they’re quite content to charge excessive fees for what is effectively the same product as everyone else’s.

Not to mention that they all provide additional services (such as LLC or other business services) for extra cost. Their customer service is adequate, but Northwest Registered Agent and Harbor Compliance give the same level of service for less than half the price.

Wrapping It All Up

When I was reviewing each New Jersey registered agent service, it occurred to me that there was only one company that could supply what I required from a registered agent, and that company was Northwest Registered Agent.

For just $125, they do everything my company needs:

  • Accept legal documents and upload them to an online document portal that lets me access my legal documents.
  • File my Articles of Organization with the New Jersey Division of Revenue on behalf of my Limited Liability Company (LLC).
  • Scan, upload, and forward my mail.
  • Provide compliance alerts that remind me of upcoming filing deadlines with the New Jersey Secretary of State.
  • Provide a statutory agent who is available during normal business hours.

You already know that their team of Corporate Guides puts them at the top of my list. The Corporate Guides will keep you up to speed on all the data you need to be on the right side of the law, and they’ll provide excellent business advice to help your New Jersey LLC avoid any sticky circumstances.

Visit Northwest Registered Agent if you are ready to begin your business venture in the state of New Jersey.
